Caption: Three samples of a light-emitting plastic, which are seen glowing in red, blue and green. Light- emitting plastics - such as polyphenylene vinylene (PPV) - are polymers which emit light when a voltage is set up across them. They were discovered in 1990 by Dr Richard Friend and Dr Donal Bradley of the Department of Physics at the University of Cambridge, UK, and Dr Andrew Holmes of the Department of Chemistry. The plastics can be made to emit light of any colour and could be used in many applications, including light- emitting devices (LEDs) and thin-screen televisions. They are being developed by a company called Cambridge Display Technology.
