Caption: EDITORIAL USE ONLY. Bioplastic research. Moulding machine being used by a food technologist to make bioplastic objects from surplus whey proteins. Due to its source, this type of bioplastic is known as dairy bioplastic. Whey is the liquid component of milk, obtained by straining the milk to remove the solid components after curdling. The proteins are mostly lactalbumin and lactoglobulin. Plastics are polymers, which are formed of repeating chains of large molecules, in this case proteins. The raw materials used to make bioplastics are renewable, making bioplastics a more sustainable product than tradiational plastics made from finite resources such as oil. Photographed in the USA.
