Caption: Self-healing spacecraft material. Researcher testing a self-healing composite laminate material intended for use on spacecraft. The material has veins of resin that leak out and seal any small break made in the surface. Other veins contain a chemical that reacts with the resin and causes it to harden and seal quickly. This is intended to allow self-repair of any micrometeoroid punctures made to satellites and spacecraft like the Space Shuttles. This test involves the Tow Placement machine (background), in the Aerospace Engineering Department at the University of Bristol, UK.
