Caption: Failure analysis. Light micrograph showing a crack in a section of a pressure tube of the kind used in heat exchangers in chemical processing plants. The tube, made of titanium-aluminium-vanadium alloy, failed during pressure testing. The picture shows a relatively large crack running diagonally from top right to bottom left, & a smaller crack at bottom left. They were caused by intergranular tearing in the recrystallised microstructure. Titanium has excellent corrosion resistance, but is susceptible to many common contaminants - including greasy fingers & soap - during its heat- treatment. Magnification: x90 at 35mm size.
