Caption: Bridge failure test. Hydraulic ram (upper centre) testing the load-bearing properties of a section cut from a small forest bridge. Sensors observe the deformations right up to the failure point. Mathematical analysis allows the behaviour of the entire bridge to be modelled. It was found that the 6-metre-span bridge, which dates from the 1950s, can still carry six times the weight limit imposed on it. 800 similar bridges are found in forests throughout the UK.
