Caption: Electric arc furnace. Molten metal in a melting pot within a plasma or electric arc furnace used for making metal alloys. The furnace works by passing an electric arc between graphite electrodes in a vaccum. This acts like a lightning bolt, heating up materials placed between the electrodes as it passes through them. Temperatures of thousands of degrees celsius can be achieved, enough to melt metals. This plasma furnace is used in the production of nickel-titanium alloys. Photographed at Lecco in Italy.
