Caption: Annealing furnace. Glowing hydrogen furnace after the removal of its heating hood (at far right). The furnace is used to heat metal or glass components as part of an annealing process. This strengthens the component by removing internal stresses that are caused by defects in its atomic structure. This furnace heats the components to a temperature of up to 1200 degrees celsius in a pure hydrogen atmosphere. The period of time at which the component is held at this temperature, and the speed at which it is cooled, depend upon the material from which it is made.
