Caption: Steelworks. Open hearth furnace inside Azvostal steelworks in Zhadanov, Russia. The manufacture of steel requires that pig iron, a high-carbon crude form of iron, is melted to burn off the impurities. This process requires very high temperatures, typically in the region of 1500 degrees Celsius. To achieve this an open hearth furnace is used. This furnace uses a process known as regenerative preheating, with exhaust gases being used to heat a second chamber, through which fuel and air are then pumped.
