Caption: Recycling household batteries. Member of the public placing a battery in a recycling collection point at a supermarket. These are alkaline batteries, used in household electrical appliances, and contain toxic heavy metals such as zinc and manganese. Other types of batteries contain similarly toxic metals such as cadmium and lithium. All types of batteries need to be recycled and disposed of carefully to avoid contaminating the environment. This is the COREPILE service in France, which provides members of the public with a place to dispose of their batteries. From 2003 to 2006, COREPILE recycled 15,000 tons of batteries.
