Caption: Recycling electrical goods. Electrical speakers waiting to be recycled. Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) contains toxic metals such as lead, cadmium and mercury, that must be disposed of safely. Other metals, such as gold and copper, can be resold at a profit when recovered on a large scale. This waste is being processed at the VALDELEC centre in Poitiers, France. VALDELEC, with four recycling centres around the country, was the largest such company in France in 2003. This centre specialises in television sets, computer equipment, electric meters, household batteries and telephones.
