Caption: Sewage treatment. Sewage treatment plant buildings in which sewage sludge is thickened by treating it with bacteria in oxygen-deficient (anaerobic) conditions. The sewage sludge is partially digested by the bacteria in closed chambers. During this process the bacteria produce high- quality methane gas which may be collected and used as a fuel. Photographed in Bavaria, Germany.
