Caption: Hawaiian statues (tikis). These wooden carved statues or ki'i stand guard over the temple at Puuhonua O Honaunau (Palace of Refuge) National Park, Big Island, Hawaii. This temple provided a refuge for warriors following battle, women and children during battles and criminals that had broken kapu or royal laws. They often depicted the royal chiefs (ali'i) who had built the temples or Hawaiian gods.
