Credit: ALEX BARTEL/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY.

Caption: A controlled demolition using explosives staggered on some of the 21 floors of this tower block, called Highworth Point, Hackney, East London. The Hackney Council block was built in the 1970s, but quickly became subject to serious leaking problems, black mould & heating difficulties. In September 1986 it was brought down. Second of a series of four pictures: ' the shudder'. The main charge has ignited at the base of the building & balls of smoke from those on the intermediate floors are visible.
