Emerald mine. Worker hacks at the wall of an emerald mine. Emerald stones are a rare variety of the mineral beryl (beryllium aluminium silicate) which are green due to the presence of chromium impurities. Emeralds are used as gemstones, whilst the commoner forms of beryl are used as ore for beryllium. Photographed in the Malyshevsky mineral deposit in the Ural Mountains, Russia.
