Caption: Disused quarry. Aerial view of an abandoned diorite quarry. Diorite is an igneous rock similar to granite, but with a lower quartz content. It was quarried at this site for use as dimension stone (natural stone that can be cut to a specific size and shape for building). Production was abandoned when the material was found to contain too many flaws. The diorite was formed from the Jurassic to Tertiary periods. Photographed at Sechelt Quarry, Sunshine Coast, British Columbia, Canada.
