Caption: Iron mine. Opencast iron mine in the Amazon rainforest of Brazil. This is the Carajas iron mine, one of the largest of its kind in the world. 45 million tonnes of iron ore is extracted here each year. The forest has been clear cut to provide access to the enormous deposits of iron ore. Despite the obvious negative impacts on the environment, including loss of biodiversity and pollution, the company that runs the mine, Cia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD), has been praised for its environmentally sound practices and for protecting a far greater area of rainforest than it uses.
