Caption: Sand mine. Sand is being mined here to make housing bricks. Sand mining is becoming an ecological problem as demand for sand in industry and construction increases. The erosion impacts on local wildlife and removal of sand at the coast can be harmful for organisms such as corals. The removal of a beachside community's natural defences, such as dunes, can lead to flooding and may damage tourism. Photographed near Hartenbos, a popular seaside resort, within the De Hoop Nature Reserve, South Africa.
