Coal mine entrance sign. This is Wistow Mine in Selby, North Yorkshire, England. It is run by UK Coal, which has scheduled this mine for closure by Spring 2004. The Selby mines complex, considered one of the biggest in Europe, opened in the 1980s. Coal reserves remain, but difficulties in mining the coal, together with competition from gas-fired power stations, makes it uneconomical to continue mining the area.
