Caption: Coal strip mining. Excavating machines mining coal from surface seams, in a technique known as strip mining. This is the Urtuisky coal mine in the Krasnokamensky district of the Chita region of Russia. The coal from this mine is a type known as brown coal (lignite). This type of coal has a high moisture content, and a relatively low energy content. It is a more polluting form of coal than black coal. The Chita region is in south-eastern Siberia, bordering Mongolia and China. Photographed on 10 August 2006.
