Caption: Copper mine. Mount Lyell copper mine and its barren polluted surroundings. Mounds of mined rock are seen in the background. In 1893, Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company was formed and began mining copper at Mount Lyell. Furnaces at the mine burned huge amounts of timber, which was supplied by felling the surrounding forests. Smelters emitted sulphur fumes that stained and polluted the soil, preventing tree growth and encouraging ground fires. Further environmental damage was caused by rainfall, which eroded the hills and slag heaps. Photographed near Queenstown, Tasmania.
