Caption: Car body welding. Robots welding a car body on a Volkswagen production line. Welding is the process by which metal parts are fused by melting them together. Robots are ideally suited to monotonous tasks like welding. They can perform repeated operations almost endlessly and their rate can be set to match the speed of the production line. The vast majority of cars in the developed world are now produced by robots. In a car production line one manufacturing task is performed on the car before it is passed on for the next task to be performed. This division of labour greatly improves efficiency. Photographed in Germany.
