Caption: Petrol engine combustion. Computer artwork of an internal combustion engine cylinder. The piston (lower right) is moved up and down by the combustion (burning) of fuel. This image shows the fuel/air mixture being ignited by the spark plug (upper left). The intake valve (left) allows fuel and air to enter the chamber. The exhaust valve (upper right) opens to allow waste gases out. In a vehicle, the movement of the piston drives the rotation of the wheels through the crankshaft. Diesel engines use compression, rather than a spark plug, to trigger combustion.
