Caption: View during construction of the Super-Proton- Synchrotron (SPS) accelerator at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory outside Geneva. The photo shows some of the huge magnets which are used to bend and focus the protons and antiprotons during their journey around the SPS ring. The protons and antiprotons travel round the ring many times until they are travelling at almost the speed of light, when they are smashed into each other within huge detectors located astride the beam pipe at several locations around the ring.
