Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Glycobiology research: nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer being used in the analysis of glycoproteins. NMR is used to determine these structures in preference over X- ray crystallography, due to problems of crystallising many of these compounds. The location of sugars (oligosaccharides) on proteins on cell surfaces, antigens & antibodies, is crucial to how these molecules behave in the body. Here at the Glycobiology Unit at Oxford University, the novel techniques necessary for studying these complex structures have been developed. Research progresses in the role of these sugars in rheumatoid arthritis & AIDS. Model: Heidi Joao
