Caption: Mass spectrometer used to determine the sequence of amino acids in proteins during proteomics research. Proteomics is the study of the structure and function of proteins. Proteins are made up of a sequence of amino acids, and the sequence of these determines the three-dimensional structure of the protein, and thus its effects and activities. Understanding how the sequence leads to the intricate three-dimensional structure will allow the design of new drugs to block the activity of undesirable proteins and augment the activity of beneficial ones. This work is being done at the Harvard Institute of Proteomics at Harvard University, Massachusetts, USA.
