Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Pharmaceutic research. Chemists hold up a research model of a molecule of a cardiovascular therapeutic compound. This compound is a cholesterol lowering agent. The molecular model shows atoms (spheres) joined by atomic bonds. The model was constructed from X-ray crystallography data. An agent known to lower cholesterol in the blood would be an important cardiovascular drug. Cholesterol is a waxy, fatlike material synthesised by all animal cells. It is also found in a fatty diet. High levels of cholesterol in the blood are associated with atheroma (fatty plaques developing on artery walls) and coronary heart disease.
