Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Drug testing. Researcher selecting a sample for gas chromatography analysis. This technique is often used in the pharmaceutical industry to analyse a sample's constitution and purity. Gas chromatography separates complex mixtures of compounds by selective partition between a stationary solid or liquid phase (including the sample) and a mobile gas phase. This is especially useful in analysing volatile chemicals without having to heat them to their boiling point. As the components come out of the chromatograph column they are analysed by a mass spectrometer, allowing them to be identified.
