It produces a relaxing, narcotic effect and, in higher doses, hallucinations. The main active compounds are cannabinoids such as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC, centre and right) and cannabidiol (CBD, left). Cannabis-derived drugs may be medically useful due to their ability to relieve pain and nausea, increase appetite and control muscle spasms. It may be beneficial to patients with multiple sclerosis, AIDS, cancer and chronic pain from nerve damage.
