Caption: Silk. Two bundles of silk of different colours. The colour of silk depends on the subspecies of silk moth (Bombyx mori) which produces it. The silk is taken from the cocoons which the caterpillars spin around the pupae to protect themselves during their metamorphosis into moths. After being pulled from the cocoons, the fine strands of silk are spun together to make the threads seen here.
