Caption: Pulp production. Technician loading a plant for the production of pulp, a moist mixture of cellulose fibres, from which paper is made. The plant seen here uses a new process called ASAM (Alkaline Sulphite with Anthraquinone and Methanol). This process is based on chlorine-free bleaching and should not cause any air or water pollution. The raw material, in this case wooden chips, is steamed and chemically digested in pressurised vessels. ASAM has been developed in an integrated project on bioenergy in which the wooden chips will be substituted with bagasse (dry pulp) coming from the cereal sweet sorghum. ASAM is funded by the Commission of the European Communities.
