Caption: Great Fire of London. Coloured etching of the Great Fire of London, England, of 1666. People can be seen fleeing from burning ruins, carrying what possessions they could salvage. At this time most of the buildings in London were made of wood. This made it easier for the fire to spread and to go on to destroy most of the walled section of the city. The government's Rebuilding Act of 1667 required all new buildings to be constructed from stone and brick. This is an etching of a painting by Griffier.
