Caption: Water powered mill. Engraving of a water powered mill which uses horizontal water wheels. The water is brought to the mill by aqueducts (upper frame) and pours into two tanks (at far left and far right). The tanks compensate for variations in the flow of water and the weight of water pressurises the fluid at the bottom of the tank where it flows out. These jets of water flow onto two water wheels (at lower centre), each of a different design. The water wheels' axes are connected to two disk-shaped mill stones (at centre).
