Caption: Wind-powered organ. Diagram of a musical organ powered by a windmill (at upper right). As the windmill turns, the spokes attached to its axis push down on a pivoted rod. This lifts a piston (at centre) attached to the other end of the pivot. The piston falls under its own weight into a cylinder and pumps air to the pipes of the organ (at centre left), allowing music to be played. Diagram drawn during the 16th century and is based on the writings of Hero of Alexandria (flourished 1st century AD).
