Caption: Water works. Engraving of water works during the 19th century which used sand filters and aeration to purify water ready for drinking. This plant, the New River Head Water Works, took water from a canal that carried water from natural springs 61 kilometres away in Hertfordshire in order to supply the city of London, Britain. Engraving from 1856.
