Caption: Early production line. Historical engraving of an early production line using a conveyor belt to carry components to different parts of the factory. Here, the process is producing railway brakes. At left, workers place large casts of the brakes on small trolleys, which are then passed to the men on the right for filling. Each of these men has a large ladle filled with molten metal, which is poured into the cast through the hole in the top. Production lines such as this greatly speeded up manufacturing processes, and allowed heavy industry to become more efficient. This example is the Westinghouse foundry, Pittsburgh, USA, in 1890.
