Caption: Magic liquid. This new compound is formed by a colloidal solution of water and silica particles to which a salt and a soluble polymer have been added. In normal conditions (right) the compound is a liquid; if shaken it becomes highly viscous almost assuming a solid form. The compound stays as a solid for a few minutes and then reassumes spontaneously the liquid form. In the liquid form each silica particle is surrounded by only one molecule of the polymer. Due to the agitation numerous polymer molecules become attached to each silica particle; at this point the colloidal solution is disrupted and the fluid becomes solid.
