Caption: Mathian steam boiler. Cutaway artwork showing the interior of a Mathian steam boiler. This design is a suspended tube type, and the suspended tubes are seen inside the boiler. Fuel, such as coal, was added through the doors at left. The burning fuel heated water and produced steam that circulated as shown (arrows), round the boiler and out through a pipe (lower right). Steam boilers were designed to circulate heat, rather than produce motion as steam engines did.
