Caption: Coffee petition. Historical leaflet from 1674 of "the women's petition against coffee". When coffee was first introduced to England, it was largely drunk by men in coffeehouses. These served as a meeting point for intellectual and political debate, and were seen by the medical profession as a healthy alternative to taverns. A group of London women, who rarely saw their husbands as a result, set up a group to petition parliament to close these coffeehouses. They were ultimately unsuccessful.
