Caption: A Burrells Traction Engine driving a threshing machine. Traction engines were widely used in farming and engineering until the advent of the internal combustion engine. Their uses on the farm included providing power for a variety of implements, such as harvesters and threshing machines. Civil engineering projects, for example bridge and road building required them for transportation of men and materials (they frequently towed large trailers); adaptations of the basic traction unit included road rollers, steam shovels, diggers and tractors. This engine was built in Thetford, Norfolk, UK, in 1910.
