Caption: Lohner-Porsche car. Engraving of the Lohner- Porsche 'mixed' car of 1901. This car was 'mixed' because it had a Daimler petrol engine which generated a current that powered the electric motors in the front wheel hubs. The absence of a clutch and gear box meant that travel in this car was smooth and trouble-free. It was capable of travelling at over 96 km per hour (60 miles per hour) at a time when the world record was only 127 km per hour (79.4 miles per hour). This car was designed by the Austrian engineer Ferdinand Porsche (1875-1951). A 'mixed' design of Porsche's provided him with his first racing win at Exelburg in the 1000 kg car class in 1902.
