Caption: Cugnot's engine. Historial engraving of Cugnot's engine, the first ever mechanically propelled road vehicle. Sponsored by the French war minister, Nicholas Cugnot's engine transported artillery through the streets of Paris, France, in 1769. The single front wheel was powered by a two-cylinder steam engine. Its undersized boiler (far right) gave a speed of only 6.5 km per hour. The project was abandoned due to several accidents.
