Caption: Early electric taxi cab. Historical artwork of the Bersey taxi cab, an electric taxi cab introduced in London, England, on 19 August 1897, by George Bersey. The Bersey taxi was the first horseless carriage taxi in London. It was battery operated and had a top speed of 15 kilometres per hour. The batteries needed recharging every 50 kilometres, and were housed underneath the passenger compartment. George Bersey's taxi company ceased trading in 1899. The first petrol-driven taxi cabs were introduced in London in 1903. Artwork from A Travers l'Electricite (G. Dary, Paris, 1900).
