Caption: Camille Jenatzy's electric car. Artwork of the Belgian engineer Camille Jenatzy (1868-1913) driving his Jamais Contente electric car. Jenatzy achieved a land speed record with this car on 29 April 1899, reaching a speed of 106 kilometres per hour. Internal combustion engine cars, developed in the 1880s, soon outperformed electric cars. As of 2007, the land speed record, set in 1997, is 1227 kilometres per hour. This French artwork dates from the early 20th century.
