Caption: Airship Norge. The airship Norge, in which the explorers Roald Amundsen and Umberto Nobile in 1926 made the first flight over the North Pole. Norge was built by Nobile, a general in the Italian air force and a professor of aeronautical engineering at Naples. The explorers circled the Pole twice before landing in Alaska. Amundsen was later killed at sea after flying to the Arctic Ocean during a search for Nobile, whose airship Italia had crashed after another trip to the Pole.
