Caption: Testing of early aeroplane. Historical image of the testing of Albert Santos-Dumont's aeroplane No. 14 by suspending it from an airship. This aeroplane became the first to make a powered flight in Europe. The flight took place on 13 September 1906 and consisted of a series of short hops, the longest being 220 metres. Santos-Dumont had previously claimed a prize for being the first person to fly around the Eiffel Tower in 1901.
