Caption: Wright Flyer on display in September 1908, in Virginia, USA. Following the first ever powered flight in the Wright Flyer I at Kitty Hawk in 1903, the Wright brothers continued to develop their aircraft design. In January 1907 they submitted their design to the US War Department, which had requested designs to develop a military aircraft. In August 1909 the Flyer was accepted as the world's first military aircraft, naming it Signal Corps Airplane No. 1.
