Caption: First parachute descent, made by the French balloonist Andre Jacques Garnerin (1769-1823), in Mousseuax Park, Paris, France, on 22 October 1797. The parachute and basket were attached to the balloon at left, which is now falling to the ground. Garnerin released himself from the balloon at a height of about 1000 metres.
