Caption: Search for Nobile's polar expedition. Plane being unloaded onto the ice from the Soviet icebreaker Krasin, in Arctic waters, on 8 July 1928. The plane was intended to find the stranded survivors of the polar expedition led by the Italian engineer and explorer Umberto Nobile. Nobile led a crew of sixteen on board the airship Italia. They flew over the North Pole, but while still in the Arctic crashed on 25 May. An international rescue effort was launched, but several rescuers, including Roald Amundsen, died in the attempt. Chukhnovsky, the pilot of this plane, reported the position of the survivors, but then was forced to make an emergency landing. By 15 July, the Krasin had rescued both the survivors and the pilot.
