Caption: Soviet high-altitude balloon. Launch of the balloon Osoaviakhim 1 on 30 January 1934. This Soviet balloon was constructed by the Osoaviakhim Society for Aviation and Chemical Warfare. It had a crew of three: Fedoseenko, Vasenko and Usyskin. They took off from Leningrad at 09:00 and reached a record altitude of 22 kilometres by noon, exceeding the previous record set by a US aeronaut. However, the cold temperatures led to the cabin becoming covered in ice, and it tore lose from the balloon during the descent, crashing to the ground and killing the crew. The barograph was recovered intact, confirming the record flight. The ashes of the crew were interred with honour in the walls of the Kremlin.
