Caption: Tupolev and his glider. Russian aircraft pioneer and designer Andrei Tupolev (1888-1972) flying in a glider in Lefortovo Park, Moscow, Russia, in 1910. Tupolev and his fellow students had built this glider while studying at the Moscow Imperial Technical High School (IMTU). This is the first known photo of Tupolev, who later became a leading Soviet aircraft designer. He oversaw the design of hundreds of aircraft, and his design bureau became the Tupolev aircraft company.
